Lessons Learned From Winnie the Pooh

Everyone is familiar with Winnie the Pooh, the adorable central character in as series of famous children’s books. The adventures of this cute bear and his friends have entertained generations of children and their parents. Although, we think of Winnie the Pooh as being written primarily for children, there are many lessons that adults can learn too.

At Ceiba Imports, we have started an adventure of building a business together and learning to find the balance between business partnership and friendship. It has been an incredible experience. Without a doubt, it is a gift to have the opportunity to create a business with your best friend but it also takes focus, patience and determination to ensure that you are succeeding on both points.

Here are some meaningful lessons that we have learned about business and friendship from Winnie the Pooh.

“As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was going to happen.”

In business you need to open to new possibilities, ideas and approaches. The creative process of being open, curious and collaborating together is energizing.   Be daring and open to all opportunities.   In building a friendship, you also have to be open and willing to move past your comfort zone. In our situation, we come from different cultural backgrounds and speak a different language but we have learned to celebrate both our differences and the many things we share in common. If not, you will risk missing out on wonderful friendships and amazing adventures.

"You must always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think."

Starting a business is tough, really tough. To succeed, you must be confident, believe in your ideas, believe in yourself and have the courage and faith to see your dreams and visions come to pass. In those moments of frustration and discouragement, you have to have the strength to remind yourself of why you started. Friendship requires a lot of encouragement too. When you know that someone believes in you that is a source of strength, confidence and motivation. True friends believe in you when don’t believe in yourself and they will jump in and do whatever is needed to get you back on track. Trust me, we have done this for each other too many times to count.

“What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favourite day,” said Pooh.

In business, you must have a positive outlook. You have to see the best in your customers, your suppliers, your team and your vision for your company.   You have to be excited and energized to face each new day. And to be truly happy, you must practice gratitude daily. Be thankful for each opportunity, each idea, each victory and each person that God has brought to cross your path. Don’t be afraid to show that appreciation. With friendship, you also must enjoy and celebrate it. Enjoy the time you spend together, laugh and make your friendships a priority. Let your friends know how much you value and appreciate them and the gift of their friendship. One of the most important lessons that we have learned is to be diligent in making time for our friendship.   Even though you may spend a lot of time together working on your business, set time aside to just be friends and have fun.   It is well worth the investment.

We can testify that business and friendship can work. It takes effort and commitment but once you learn to put some of these ideas into practice, you will cherish the adventure that is friendship and understand that it truly is one of life’s greatest rewards.

“We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?' asked Piglet. Even longer,' Pooh answered.”
